When flowering plants evolved, they swiftly transformed the planet, and their productivity sustains much of life today. From rainforests to prairies to seagrass meadows, much of the Earth’s diversity is now directly dependent on flowering plants. Without flowers, primates would not have evolved and our ancestors would never have ventured beyond the forest in grasslands. Using examples from his latest book, How Flowers Made Our World, David Haskell will illuminate the many ways that we live on a floral planet. This webinar features Judy Wu-Smart from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Judy Wu-Smart has degrees in Zoology and Entomology, and she has researched the effects of pesticide residue accumulation in brood comb on honey bee health. Her PhD research examined the effects of systemic neonicotinoid insecticides on honey bee and bumble bee queens and colony development. She has also taught workshops including beekeeping and pesticide certification courses. She’s currently an Assistant Professor and Extension Specialist at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. In her role at the university, Judy is developing a pollinator health program to help understand the underlying stressors in bee health and their interactions with environmental toxicants. Her goal is to integrate her research and extension efforts with policy to inform the regulatory-decision making process by identifying risk mitigation opportunities and best management practices that will better protect beneficial pollinators in agricultural and urban landscapes. Yet, their contributions are often overlooked, and many species face growing threats. Join PPAN for a webinar with Dr. Kristen Lear, Director of Bat Conservation International’s (BCI) Agave Restoration Initiative. Dr. Lear will highlight the ways bats support biodiversity and human well-being, share updates on BCI’s conservation work, and offer practical steps we can take to help bats thrive, including how to make our own communities and backyards more bat-friendly. -- Meet Dr Lear: As a bat conservationist, Dr. Kristen Lear, PhD seeks to develop practical, equitable, and meaningful solutions to bat conservation challenges through collaborative research, partnership with local communities, and public engagement and outreach. In 2020, she completed her PhD in Integrative Conservation at the University of Georgia focusing on the conservation of endangered pollinating bats in northeast Mexico. Now, she's Bat Conservation International's Agave Restoration Program Director, and leads the organization's bi-national Agave Restoration Initiative to restore and enhance habitat for endangered pollinating bats and support community livelihoods in the US Southwest and Mexico. - Colorado Gives #forthebees | PeopleandPollinators
Let's protect the littlest creatures during this year's Colorado Gives Campaign! ❄️ 🦋 🐞 Your love #forthebees this winter means the difference between a silent spring and a buzzing one. THANK YOU! 🐝 🙏🏼 Thank you for being the beating heart of PPAN #forthebees ! You see it happening—fewer bees in the garden, fewer butterflies on your hikes. The pollinators—as well as birds, bats, frogs, and other wildlife whom we love—are disappearing, and there is no mystery as to why. The indiscriminant overuse of pesticides, habitat loss, and food systems that reduce rather than augment biodiversity are all partly to blame. The good news is: these are all threats that you can—and are— tackling head-on at the state and local levels. Colorado is becoming a haven for pollinators and the ecosystems they support, thanks to you getting involved, whether that's in the garden, at the hive, at your local park or schoolyard, with your City Council, or at the state Capitol—and PPAN is with you every step of the way. You all showed up for pollinators this Colorado Gives Day and helped us not only meet, but exceed—our $50,000 goal to protect the little creatures whose lives sustain all life on earth. THANK YOU!! Year-end fundraising continues through December 31st! We thank you for including People & Pollinators Action Network in your year-end giving. Our goal is to raise another $10,000 by December 31st at midnight to start 2026 off STRONG! People & Pollinators Action Network's EIN is #47-2260229. Our mailing address to receive checks is PO Box 355 Niwot, CO 80544. Please give generously today to protect the pollinators you love. People & Pollinators Action Network's EIN is #47-2260229. - Our Approach | People and Pollinators
The People and Pollinators Action Network’s staff and members work closely to forge strategic wins for people, pollinators, and the state of Colorado. OUR APPROACH HOW WE WORK FOR POLLINATORS Outreach & Education PPAN mobilizes communities in Colorado to take positive action for pollinators. We offer webinars, workshops, events, and presentations that engage with current pollinator issues and the steps we can take to protect both pollinator populations and human health. Our outreach efforts aim to address negative stereotypes and connotations surrounding insects and other pollinator species, to drive home the significance of pollinators to both our ecosystems and daily lives, and to inspire collective action for pollinator conservation. We have recruited over 2,300 individuals and businesses to take our pollinator pledge to use pollinator-safe practices on their properties, and continue to grow our passionate constituent and volunteer base. Public Policy PPAN works with both local and state governmental agencies and elected officials to encourage pollinator friendly policies in land and facility management. We have been instrumental in passing municipal, county, and state resolutions to: (1) encourage the conservation of and transition to healthy pollinator habitat, (2) reduce the use of pesticides, and (3) engage the public to develop a better understanding of the importance of pollinators. Collaboration PPAN works collaboratively with a number of like-minded organizations doing similar work in Colorado to be as effective and efficient as possible. Some of our current partners include the Sierra Club state chapter, Colorado State Beekeepers Association, Audubon Rockies, Denver Audubon, CO Native Plant Society, CO Wildlife Federation, Front Range Wild Ones, and Clean Label Project, to name a few. See our "Coalitions" page for more information about our roles in a number of local and statewide groups promoting pollinator conservation and the safeguarding of public health. In addition, we work with a number of cities to provide volunteer support for organically-managed public parks and the maintenance of native plant beds. Activities Beyond events, partnerships, and educational opportunities, PPAN is also growing a number of exciting projects, ranging from native habitat work to upcoming media campaigns. Stay tuned for more info and ways to get involved! VIEW OUR ACCOMPLISHMENTS GET INVOLVED

RESOURCES & RESEARCH Shop at Pollinator Safe Retailers! Use these Pollinator Safe Businesses and tell them we sent you! As more and more people, communities, and neighborhoods pledge to be “pollinator safe,” consumers want to make sure that the plants and garden products they buy will not harm pollinators. We are continually building our list of Colorado businesses that have pledged to carry pollinator safe plants and products. Nonetheless, it is always important to ask the staff at these businesses whether plants or soil have been treated already with pesticides and whether the plants you are interested in will attract pollinators. Please see the lists below of pollinator safe retailers, landscape and lawn care providers, tree care companies, farms, and food companies. We will keep adding to this list! - More Play Less Spray | People and Pollinators
People and Pollinators Action Network (PPAN) offers this guide for best practices for a pollinator friendly habitat across Colorado. Did you know that places where you play such as parks, schools, and lawns, may have been treated with toxic chemicals that can negatively impact the health of people, pets, and pollinators? Due to our society's infatuation with non-native turf, there is a lot of unnecessary use of synthetic pesticides and fertilizers to eliminate weeds and keep these spaces green. What are pesticides? “ Pesticide” is an umbrella term that includes—but is not limited to—insecticides, herbicides, fungicides, and rodenticides. This includes Weed & Feed products! Learn more: beyondpesticides.org Here are some pesticide facts: Children exposed to pesticides during development may have lower IQs, birth defects and developmental delays, and face higher risk of autism, ADHD, and cancer. Pets are also especially vulnerable to pesticide exposure. Lawn chemicals have been linked to two types of canine cancers, and can contribute to rashes & skin allergies. Pesticides are toxic to birds, pollinators, and beneficial insects. Remember, insects are baby bird food--don't poison their meals!
